Buhari Critic Under Twitter Watch! Presidency Reacts To Account Suspension
The Presidency has reacted after micro-blogging platform, Twitter, on Thursday, suspended the account of a co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) campaign and a strong critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha Yesufu,
A popular online news platform had reported that twitter suspended Yesufu’s account for being a vocal critic of President Buhari’s administration and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Caution: this account is temporarily restricted. You are seeing this warning because there has been some unusual activity from this account,” a message on Yesufu’s twitter account had reportedly read. Checks however indicate that the account suspension was later lifted.
Reacting to the report, President Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, distanced his principal from the suspension of the activist’s twitter page.
“Aisha violated Twitter rules, and Twitter suspended/restricted her activities, but Sahara Reporters is here bring Buhari’s name in it. Please do the needful, tell us the rules she violated that got her restricted. We are all eager to know,” said Ahmad.
Yesufu is known for her fierce criticism of the current administration. The BBOG co-convener had during one of President Buhari’s medical vacations called on him to resign from office, saying his ill-health was limiting his performance and telling on the country’s economy.
Also, Yesufu had ahead of the 2019 presidential election wished Buhari a “safe trip to Daura Insha Allah”, while offering to help him pack his belongings out of the Presidential Villa after he may have lost the election.
Her constant criticism of Buhari may have prompted the speculation that the Presidency was behind suspension of her account.
Meanwhile, in its term and conditions for using the social media platform, Twitter says an account can be suspended if it contains spam, abusive tweets or if the account is at security risk.
