Buhari: No Law That Says I should Have 36 Ministries

President Muhammadu Buhari has insisted that they will be ministers without portfolios as the constitution of Nigeria does not make it compulsory for him to have 36 ministries.

According to the president, the constitution only stipulates that there must be a minister from each state of the federation without mandating a ministry for each of the ministers.

Speaking on Tuesday afternoon while receiving the list of confirmed ministerial-designates from Senate President Bukola Saraki at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The president explained that he sent the names of 36 ministerial nominees owing to the constitutional provision that stipulates that ministers must come from all the 36 states of the federation.

It will be recalled that the president while in New Delhi for the India-Africa Summit had lamented that Nigeria is broke therefore some ministers would be without portfolios but that all the 36 ministers would be “sitting in the cabinet”.

While thanking the Senate for its work, Buhari assured that he would continue to follow the constitution.

Speaking earlier, the Senate President Bukola Saraki had told the president that he was at the Presidential Villa to formally present to Buhari, the list of the 36 ministerial nominees confirmed by the Senate.
