Buhari Sacks AEDC Management 24 Hours After Strike Action

President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked the management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company over the strike embarked upon by its employees which caused disruptions in power supply across Abuja, Nasarawa, Kogi and environs.

The staff under the Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike over 20 months unpaid entitlements.

The AEDC has a franchise for the distribution and sale of electricity across the Federal Capital Territory, Niger State, Kogi State and Nassarawa State.

KANN Utility Limited (KANN) is the 60 per cent equity holders in AEDC, while the Federal Government holds 40 per cent equity in AEDC.

The Federal government however, intervened as it gave the AEDC management 21 days to pay up all outstanding entitlements.

As part of the development, a statement issued by Ofem Uket, media aide of the minister of state for power revealed that Buhari has directed the Bureau of Public Enterprises to set up a new management.

The statement reads, “The presidential directives as conveyed also directed the Bureau of Public Enterprises to set up a new management team of the AEDC.

“In a memorandum of understanding MOU, jointly signed by the minister of state power Goddy Jedy Agba, the chairman Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC, Sanusi Garba, director-general, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Alex Okoli, comrade Joe Ajaero on behalf of the union, the federal government ordered the suspension of the strike [and asked to] given 21 days within which the outstanding emoluments and entitlements of staff will be paid.”

The staff union had in a notice said, “Pay the remaining: batches of 2020 bonus. Pension remittances (19 months). Third batch of bulk rent. Thrift deductions (17 months) and union check off dues (4 months. AEDC management pay us now!”
