Buhari Swears In Tanko Muhammad As CJN

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, swore in Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria.

He was sworn in today at the State House, Abuja in the presence of vice-president, Yemi Osinbajo; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila,; Deputy senate president, Ovie Omo-Agege amongst others.

Muhammad has been occupying the office of CJN in acting capacity since January.

Recall that last week, Tanko was confirmed as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria by the senate after Buhari had presented his name.

Tanko was appointed by President Buhari after Justice Walter Onnoghen was controversially suspended by the president.

He has been on acting capacity since January 2019.

Tanko was born December 31, 1953. He obtained his West Africa School Certificate in 1973. He was awarded a law degree by the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1980.

He later obtained master’s and doctorate degrees from the same university in 1984 and 1998 respectively.

In 1981, he was appointed as chief magistrate of the high court of the federal capital territory (FCT). He held that position till 1991.
