BUHARI: ‘They Will Be Hit In The Pockets’ – Punch Editorial Attacking President Draws Reactions

One of Nigeria’s national daily newspapers, Punch, on Wednesday, reached a resolution to start addressing President Muhammadu Buhari by his rank as a military general and Head of State before the country transitioned to democratic system of government.

The newspaper also stated in the editorial that it will start addressing President Buhari’s administration as a “regime” as was used during his tenure as military head of state.

This, Punch said, was its own way of protesting the “the unfolding saga over Omoyele Sowore and the unruliness of the SSS and the government,” and “a reflection of the serial disregard of the Buhari regime for human rights and its battering of other arms of government and our democratic institutions.”

The article which was published in the early hours of Wednesday has been drawing reactions from Nigerians, including one from President Buhari’s senior special adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina.

Adesina said in reaction: “If you decide to call him Major General, he wasn’t dashed the rank, he earned it. So, you are not completely out of order. The fact that you can do so is even another testimony to press freedom in Nigeria.”
