The Lagos state government has begun a manual demolition of buildings that have been marked for demolition in Freeland street, Ita Faji area of Lagos state.
The development follows the collapse of a 3 storey building in the Island which had a nursery and primary school on the second floor.
The building collapse had claimed nine lives which included mostly children, while about fifty were rescued.
Recall that Lagos State Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, who visited the scene on Wednesday, said the school was not authorized to operate in the building.
“The building is not technically a school; it is a residential building that was actually accommodating an illegal school, so to speak, on the second floor.”
He added that many houses in the area had structural problems and would be demolished.
President Muhammadu Buhari, speaking on the incident had ordered the state government to put in place measures to prevent such “tragic” occurrences.
