Burning Lagos Tank Farm Collapses, Inferno Increases

Reports have it that the petrol tank farm belonging to Oando located at Ijora, Lagos State, is still on fire about 24 hours after the facility was engulfed in fire.

On Thursday, firefighters tried to put the fire under control but despite their efforts, the fire which started around 12:20 p.m. is still burning.

In a tweet on Friday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, said the facility which has capacity to hold 7.5 million litres of petrol had collapsed, leading to an increase in intensity of the inferno.

However, the Lagos state Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) director general, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, has said the combined response team of public and private stakeholders have managed to “localize” the fire.

Though the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, the Acting Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said staff of the facility were safely evacuated without casualties.

Oke-Osanyintolu urged Lagosians to remain calm while the as responders continue to battle the fire to prevent it from spreading to other locations
