Cholera Kills 14 In Plateau State, Over 950 Others Infected

Plateau State government has announced 953 cases of cholera infections and 14 deaths in the State.

This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Health, Nimkong Lar on Wednesday.

This follows reported cases across the country, with the most affected states being Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Zamfara, Bayelsa and Kaduna.

According to the Commissioner, the infection had started from Jos North Local Government, and has continued to spread to 13 other local Government areas.

“Jos North has the highest number of cholera with 484 cases while Jos South and Bassa Local Governments follow with 307 and 57 cases respectively,“ he said.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, had disclosed effort to set up a multi-sectoral National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre to curb cases of cholera across the country.

According to the Director-General, NCDC Chikwe Ihekweazu efforts are ongoing to strenghten the response to the cholera outbreak, through the digitalisation of the national surveillance system, establishment of laboratories and treatment centres and training of health workers, among others.

According to him, cholera is a preventable and treatable epidemic-prone disease that is transmitted by eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

The Commissioner, also informed that the state has so far administered 100,154 doses of covid-19 vaccines, out of the 105,600 doses given by the federal government.

“As regards COVID-19 cases, the state has so far tested 73,177 people with confirmed cases of 9,068, discharged 9,008, and recorded 57 deaths,“ he said.

“The state has so far administered 100,154 doses of vaccines, out of the 105,600 doses given by the federal government, 5,000 were returned because of their expiry date of June 28,” he said.
