Cholera Outbreak: Death Toll Hits 28 In Kano

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Kabiru Getso says the state has recorded 28 deaths and at least 50 confirmed cases as a result of a cholera outbreak in the past 7 months.

He also said within the period, 400 suspected cases of acute watery diarrhoea were recorded.

Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday, Getso said since the beginning of the outbreak, of the disease across the 33 local government areas, the state government through the Ministry of Health had instituted several control measures to combat the outbreak.

He further said the state government had also approved the sum of 32 million Naira to manage epidemics in the state in addition to setting up of Rapid Response Team.

“The team will respond and investigate any rumoured cases in the state and provision and re-positioning of emergency medical supplies and consumables in facilities.

“The control of this outbreak depends on not only government but also on other key stakeholders such as the civil society organisations, media and community-based organisations, among others,” he noted.

Getso also encouraged husbands to allow their pregnant women and children to make proper use of the health services, which are free of charge.
