Confusion in PDP Over Conflicting Judgments On Convention

Justice Ibrahim Watila of a Federal High court in Port Harcourt Monday had earlier in the day ordered that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor the national convention of the party slated for Wednesday.

Ruling on a suit filed by Senator Ben Obi for himself and other members of the National Convention Planning Committee of the party, Justice Watila also granted that the Inspector General of Police , Commissioner of Police, Rivers state , Director of State Service should provide security for the convention.

However, controversial Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja restrained the PDP from proceeding with the national convention.

Justice Abang in an interim order directed the party not to proceed with the convention pending the determination of the suit by factional chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff challenging his removal.

Ruling on an application by Sheriff’s counsel Adeniyi Akintola (SAN) to grant an interlocutory injunction restraining the caretaker committee of the party from organizing the convention, the judge said that the actions of members of the caretaker committee could be viewed as contempt of court.

The judge observed that Ben Obi, who applied before him to be joined as an interested party, had gone to another Federal High Court in Port Harcourt for an ex parte order approving the convention.
Further hearing has been fixed for tomorrow, Tuesday.
