Coronavirus: Lagos Moves To Stop Friday, Sunday Services In Mosques, Churches

Amid rising Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases across countries, including Nigeria, the Lagos state government has announced plans to suspend worship services in churches and mosques across the country to curb the virus.

This was according to the state’s commissioner of information Gbenga Omotoso, who made the disclosure  on Wednesday after the country recorded five new cases of the virus.

Recall that the ministry of health had confirmed the 5 new cases of COVID19 on Wednesday, saying three of them were imported from the United States and the United Kingdom.

One of the new cases, an American national, was said to have arrived into the country through land border as a biker.

With four of the cases  in Lagos and one in Ekiti State, Omotoso said the government would soon suggest to religious leaders to halt services, especially where there are large gatherings.

“We are all aware that the federal government asked the National Youth Service Corps to shut down orientation camps; yesterday, the commissioner for home affairs said there will be a meeting with religious leaders today.

“It is going to be suggested to them to maybe stop Friday and Sunday services – wherever we have large gatherings… I am sure they will be advised to shut down the services in the interest of the public and all of us. I am sure they are going to comply.”
