The National Judicial Council has extended the suspension of court sittings across the country till further notice, in view of the Coronavirus lockdown order operating in most parts of the state including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This was disclosed in a circular to all heads of courts signed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad.

However, the CJN stated that courts were expected to sit particularly when it had to do with dispensing matters that were urgent, essential or time-bound in line with extant laws.

Recall that the CJN had on March 24, suspended court sittings for an initial period of two weeks, due to the need to comply with social distancing guidelines.

But Muhammad, who urged the courts to fully comply with the Covid-19 regulations, stressed that the continued suspension was part of preventive measures geared towards curbing the spread of the virus in the country.

” Your Lordship are hereby directed to bring the content of this circular to the notice of all stakeholders in justice administration, please,” the statement read in part.
