China’s health commission said on Tuesday that another batch of 108 patients infected by the virus had died, taking the death record in China to 1,016.

The novel virus was first reported from Wuhan, China, on 31 December 2019 and is said to be contacted through human-to-human transmission.

The World Health Organization (WHO) had also declared the SARS-like virus a global emergency, warning that the spread could be alarming.

“The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries,” WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

In a bid to contain the menace, numerous countries have had to evacuate their citizens from China;  however, 43,090 people across the world (as at Tuesday) have been diagnosed with the infection, according to CNN reports.
