Coronavirus: Photo Of Iran’s New Burial Ground Surfaces

Following the confirmation of over 10,075 Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and 429 deaths in Iran, the Middle East country has reportedly begun expansion work on one of its major cemeteries.

CNN obtained satellite images from March 1 to March 8 which showed the ongoing expansion work at the Behesht-e Masoumeh cemetery in Qom, which is the seventh largest metropolis and seventh largest city in Iran.

Qom is said to be the area that is worst hit by COVID-19 in Iran, as the country has the third-highest number of COVID-19 cases after mainland China and Italy.

The reason for the rapid expansion of the cemetery may be due to Islam’s tradition that dead bodies should be immediately buried after death, reports CNN.

Among those that have died from COVID-19 in Iran are a newly elected member of the Iranian parliament and an aide to the country’s supreme leader.

The virus had also infected Iran’s head of government task force Iraj Harirchi and the country’s vice president for women and family affairs, Masoumeh Ebtekar.
