Covenant, UI, UNN Named Among World’s Best Universities

Three Nigerian universities have been included in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The list, which featured 86 countries, was launched on Wednesday at Times Higher Education’s World Academic Summit at the National University of Singapore.

The Nigerian schools on the list are, Covenant University, University of Ibadan, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Covenant University, University of Ibadan were ranked 601- 800, out the more than 1,250 higher education institutions on the list.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is ranked 1001+.

28 African ranked institutions made the cut for the 2019 ranking. Covenant University and University of Ibadan are ranked fifth and sixth position respectively.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is 23 on the African table.

The development is an improvement for Nigeria, compared to last year’s ranking, where only the University of Ibadan made the list.

South African institutions – University of Cape Town, ranked 156; University of the Witwatersrand, ranked 201–250; Stellenbosch University, ranked 301–350; and University of KwaZulu-Natal, ranked 401–500 – make up the top four in Africa, respectively.

For the third consecutive year, Oxford University, United Kingdom, retains the number one position globally.

Another university in the UK, Cambridge, is in second place, while Stanford University in the United States is third.

Completing the top 10, are Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U.S., fourth; California Institute of Technology, U.S., fifth; Harvard University, U.S., sixth; Princeton University, U.S., seventh; Yale University, U.S., eighth; Imperial College London, UK, ninth; and University of Chicago, U.S., 10th.

“Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings is the most rigorous there is, and this is our most globally competitive listing to date,” said Phil Baty, Editorial Director of Global Rankings for Times Higher Education.

The ranking is now in its 15th year.

The universities are graded in the core areas like teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
