Covid-19: 1 Million Death A Difficult Milestone, WHO DG Grieves

Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom has said that a record one million covid-19 deaths so far registered is indeed a sad day for the world.

However, Adhanom, on Tuesday, expressed hope that irrespective of the ravages caused by the Coronavirus, it would eventually be contained.

“One million lives have been lost to #COVID19. This milestone is a difficult moment for the whole world, but there are also glimmers of hope that give us encouragement for the weeks and months ahead.

“We’ve lost 1 million lives to #COVID19 and many more are suffering,” he tweeted.

He stressed that the loss of lives was an irrecoverable one.

“My heart is with all those grieving.
My prayers are with those who are sick. My thoughts are with #healthworkers working tirelessly on the front lines to save lives,” he stated.

However, the WHO DG called for the sustenance of the outlined health advisory across all nations.

He said that while there seems to be a breakthrough in scientific research for effective drugs and vaccine, preventive measures were still needed.

“We must #ACTogether to end the pandemic.

“While we await further breakthroughs, we have seen that the virus can be effectively contained through the application of tried and tested public health measures.

“Many countries have driven an all-of-government, all-of-society response. With the right infrastructure in place, they were able to act early to contain outbreaks before transmission got out of hand,” he said.

The public health advisory outlined by WHO include washing of hands, use of hand sanitizers, social distancing and wearing of facemask among others.

WHO also recommends continuous testing, tracing and treating of every case.

Covid-19 was first reported to WHO in late December 2019, from Wuhan China.
