Covid-19 Surge: Italy Imposes Christmas ‘Lockdown’ December 21

Amid rising number in Coronavirus cases and deaths (over 67,000), the Italian Government has directed a national lockdown restrictions in a bid to contain the surging pandemic during the Christmas holidays.

Lately, the virus is resurfacing in Europe particularly Germany, France, Spain and now Italy, leading to revised directives by their respective governments.

According to the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, scientific predictions showed that cases in the country could skyrocket if new measures were not imposed.

“The virus continues to circulate everywhere. We can bend it, but we cannot defeat it.

“This is why even among our experts there is a strong concern that the contagion curve could surge during the Christmas period,” he said in a press briefing on Friday.

He added that the country needed to “confront the upcoming holidays in a way to better protect ourselves, and also in view of the general resumption of activities that will come in January.”

The Associated Press reports that “the new decree puts strict limits on movements on holidays and weekends from Dec. 21 through the Jan. 6.”

The country would also experience a 10 p.m to 5 a.m. curfew during the period.
