Covid-19 Upsurge: Rwanda Govt Shuts Schools In Kigali

Following covid-19 upsurge in the country, the Government of Rwanda has ordered the closure of all schools (except boarding schools) in the capital city of Kigali.

The Government said the decision was taken after consultations with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health as well as other stakeholders.

It also advised affected schools to subscribe to remote learning.

But the directive did not affect schools in other areas in the country.

“In order to further contain the spread of Covid-19, especially in the city of Kigali, the Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, would like to inform all stakeholders that:

“All Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools (public and private) will be closed in the City of Kigali, effective 18 January 2021. Remote learning is highly encouraged

“Boarding students will remain in their respective schools and will continue to receive essential services.

“All other schools outside of the city of Kigali will continue teaching and learning activities, respecting Covid-19 prevention measures.

“The above guidelines will be reviewed in two weeks upon health assessment,” the statement read on Sunday.

In Nigeria, schools have been ordered to reopen on Monday, amid rising cases of the coronavirus.

The schools have been mandated (by relevant authorities) to put necessary covid-19 measures in place.
