Covid-19: WHO ‘Worried’ About Rising Cases In Central, South America As Europe Sees Decline

The World Health Organization(WHO)has acknowledged that Europe, which was formerly the epicenter of covid-19 pandemic, was now recording low infections and deaths while countries in Central and South America were still recording high rate of infection.

“The number of COVID19 cases in Europe continues to decline; yesterday saw the fewest cases reported in Europe since the 22nd of March,” WHO’s Director General, Tedros Adhanom disclosed at covid-19 press briefing in Geneva, on Wednesday.

WHO DG also added that Central and Southern America were recording exponential covid-19 cases ( the United States and Brazil are currently the countries with the highest case globally).

“We are especially worried about Central and South America, where many countries are witnessing accelerating epidemics,” he said.

Dr Tedros also stressed that though the number of covid-19 cases in Africa and parts of Asia was not compared to others, it was gradually increasing.

“We also see increasing numbers of cases in the Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia and Africa, although the numbers are much smaller,” he stated.

WHO had advised countries not to relax but to strictly comply with all public health advisories on covid-19, so as to curb its spread.

There are more than 6 million covid-19 infections and about 384,181 deaths globally according to latest Worldometer figures.
