Democracy Day: Gov Ikpeazu Warns Against Protest In State

Abia State governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has called on civil society groups in the State to cancel their planned protest in Aba and Umuahia today Monday, 14th June, 2021.

The governor advised the groups to reconsider their action, saying that the precarious security situation in the region and country at large must be considered.

Ikpeazu expressed worry that the Abia State Police Command and other relevant security agencies in the state were not informed about the planned protest, warning it may be hijacked by miscreants.

The governor in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Chris Ezem, warned that the state government will not tolerate any individual or group attempting to undermine the relative peace been experienced in the state and urged the organisers to shun the planned protest.

The statement said:

“We are also aware that the organizers have not contacted the state police command or any other relevant agency to provide security for the planned rally thereby predisposing the event to the likelihood of being hijacked by hoodlums thereby possibly leading to the break down of law and order.

“In view of the above, we wish to appeal for cancellation of the planned rally pending when proper security arrangements are firmed up with the police and other relevant security agencies to ensure the safety of the protesters. We shall not tolerate any person or persons to undermine the relative peace we enjoy in Abia.

“Law abiding citizens and visitors are advised to go about their normal duties”.
