Dethroned Emir Sanusi To Sue Ganduje

Lawyers to the dethroned Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, have asked the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje-led Kano State government to reverse the erstwhile monarch’s banishment from Kano or be prepared to meet them in court.

Sanusi’s lawyers also issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Kano State Government to release him from unlawful custody.

The former emir’s counsel, led by Abubakar Mahmoud, made the request at a press conference on Tuesday.

Since his reported banishment from Kano, Sanusi’s whereabouts had not been certain.

Mahmoud said it was “illegal, unconstitutional and a clear abuse of power” to continue to hold Sanusi after deposing him.

He therefore called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to ensure Sanusi’s immediate release.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to the Kano State Government, Usman Alhaji, who announced Sanusi’s dethronement on Monday, had said Alhaji said Sanusi’s removal was, “in compliance with Part 3 section 13 of the Kano State Emirate law 2019 and other reasons stated above.”

He hinged the emir’s removal on his alleged disrespect to lawful instructions by Ganduje.
