On regaining his freedom, the Senator quickly filed a suit against the Inspector General of Police, asking the court to restrain the police from further arresting him.

He was said to have been granted bail on health grounds by Justice Yusuf Halilu of the said court.

As part of the conditions for bail handed the Senator were for him to present three sureties who reside and have properties in Abuja.

The judge also stated that one of the sureties must be the clerk of the National Assembly who would issue a letter attesting that Melaye will always be available for trial.

Recall that the police had picked up Senator Mekaye from his residence in Abuja on January 4 after laying a siege to his house for about eight days.

The police arrested the federal lawmaker over his alleged involvement in the murder of one of its officers on some time ago.
