A don, Dr Joy Ezugwu, Wednesday, launched an endowment initiative at her alma mater, Central Primary School, Opi-Uno, Enugu State, to encourage the pupils of the school to be serious with their studies.
Dr Ezugwu, a senior lecturer at the Department of Religion and Cultural Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, also announced awards for all the best pupils of each class of the primary school from next term.
She told THE WHISTLER that the endowment was to pay back to the primary school that she started her academic career.
“I started my academic journey in this school, and whatever I have initiated to do henceforth is a homecoming to me,” Ezugwu said. “I want to encourage these pupils to work hard. They can contribute positively towards national development from anywhere. It simply requires to be focused, determined and obedient to set rules. I am here to motivate them. We need synergies to make the young ones understand the dynamics of life.”
She said her endowment would be determined by the need assessment of the time.

“They are meant for all the pupils that come first across all the classes per term. Depending on the realities, exceptional pupils may enjoy some level of academic sponsorships after their graduation from primary. We need to motivate them to help them to discover their potentialities at their teens. It is to catch them young.
“I will also collaborate with resource persons and agencies to be organizing enlightenment programmes for them. They need role models. It is a pilot scheme, and plans are in the pipeline to extend the gesture beyond this primary school. There are like minds who may key into this scheme. If our young ones get our concept right, it will translate to a better society tomorrow.”
The principal of the school, Mr Donatus Onyishi, commended Dr Ezugwu for the intervention.
According to him, “This is the first of its kind in this school. We are begging other people that passed through this primary school to emulate Dr Ezugwu. These pupils have been motivated. The result will be seen: these pupils learnt a lot.”
Our correspondent reports that Dr Ezugwu also introduced awards to exceptional teachers in the schools.
