Don’t Panic Over Tremors, Atiku Tells Abuja Residents

Former Vice President and 2019 presidential hopeful, Atiku Abubakar, has allayed the fears of Abuja residents over the suspected cases of earth tremors experienced in parts of the federal capital late Thursday and Friday morning.

The FCT Emergency and Management Agency (FEMA) had confirmed the incidents, saying “the possible cause of the earth shakings might be as a result of Earth Tremor”.

Reacting, Mr Atiku urged residents of Mpape, Maitama and other areas where the “shakings” were felt, to be calm and not panic.

He said in a tweet, “I wish to encourage inhabitants of Abuja not to panic following reported cases of tremor experienced in some parts of the city. It will be reassuring to citizens for the relevant authorities to investigate the situation.”

Meanwhile, in their reaction to the incidents, FEMA said the cause of the tremors could be due to “stress in underground rocks and may be due to rock blasting and mining activities in the area.”

The agency advised the Abuja residents to “stay in a building, locate a safe room, drop down and take cover under desks or tables and hold on tight to it” should the incident repeat itself again.

“If you are in the car, slow down and drive to a clear place, stay in the car until the shaking stops,” advised FEMA.
