Don’t Trigger Full-Blown Strike, NLC Warns FG As NASU, SSANU Begin 7-day Warning

The Nigeria Labour Congress on Monday called on the Federal Government to comply with the demands of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

NASU and SSANU, affiliate unions of the NLC, embarked on a seven-day warning strike over the government’s failure to release four-month salaries of members withheld during an eight-month strike in 2022.

In a communique made available to THE WHISTLER, the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said there was no credible reason or explanation for withholding the worker’s salaries in the first place.

“We join our affiliate unions in demanding the immediate payment of the withheld salaries of their members.

“At a time confidence is being restored to the public universities, the least the government could do is not engineer another strike” Ajaero decried.

Speaking on the ripple effect of the strike, the NLC said, “The toll on all the parties will be unacceptably high, especially for students and parents who bear the burden of movement on our dangerous roads”.

The union further urged the Federal Government to expeditiously pay up the outstanding debt and not take for granted the maturity of these NASU and SSANU.
