DPR Seals 8 Illegal LPG Plants In Akwa Ibom

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has sealed eight illegal Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) plants in Akwa Ibom State.

According to the head of operations of DPR in Eket field offfice, Joy Koro, the reason for the closure of the LGP plants was due to non-registration with the DPR in the state.

“Some of the gas plants sealed off did not receive approval from DPR before commencing sales or storing the vessels in the state,” said Koro.

He further stated that “The routine surveillance of LPG plants, the department checked compliance to safety standards, current storage, sales licence and illegal gas plants that have been stored without our approval.

“The critical distance from the adjoining structure fell below the approval and the regulation we gave to them; they did not follow it,” he said.

Koro added that the LPG plants did not measure up to the minimum requirement given to them and that the facility where they stored the products fell below the minimum required plan for the plants.

“They got the gas plant without measuring the distance from the adjoining wall to the gas storage of the vessels,” he said.

Koro said the DPR had given early approval for establishment of the the plants, but noted that the department would not issue a final approval until they comply with the requirements.

The DPR further threatened to prosecute culprits who refuse to operate according to its compliance and operational guidelines.
