DR Congo Hold Super Eagles In Port Harcourt

The Super Eagles of Nigeria played a 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday at the Adokiye Amiesimeka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The international friendly was an opportunity for coach Gernot Rohr to fill the last two slots for his 23-man list for the 2018 World Cup that starts on June 14 in Russia.

Rohr is expected to drop six players to add to the already injured Moses Simon.

Troost-Ekong, who partnered Leon Balogun at the back, put Nigeria ahead in the 14th minute, his first goal for the Eagles.

A well worked free kick from Ogenyi Onazi put the visitor’s defence in confusion as the ball fell for Ekong for a simple tap in.

The visitors levelled the game in the 74th minute after a controversial spot-kick was awarded by the Ghanaian referee.

Ola Aina was penalised for holding on to DRC’s No. 6, unfortunately, the incident appeared to have occurred just outside the box.

Uzoho was beaten by Ngulubi, who sent the Nigerian goalkeeper the wrong way.

The Eagles pressed for a winner in the closing stages but were unlucky after Alex Iwobi’s shot nearly found the back of the net.

Before flying to Russia, the Eagles will on 2nd June play England at Wembley Stadium and Czech Republic for days later.
