Ebonyi Centre Screens 21, 209 Cervical, Breast Cancer Patients In Eleven Years

The National Obstetric Fistula Centre in Ebonyi State screened over 21, 209 cervical and breast cancer patients since 2010, the centre’s director said on Monday.

Dr Johnson Obuna, who spoke when the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ebonyi State, visited him in Abakaliki, added that the centre had also screened 1, 273 prostate cancer patients within the period under review.

In his words, “We have treated 513 cervical, 438 breast and 43 prostate cancer cases since inception. In terms of prostate surgery, we have handled about 849 cases.

“We have screened 868 cases in mammogram services and rehabilitated 486 fistula patients.”

He said among the services rendered at the centre was maternity care, adding that the agency carried out 93 caesareans, and 299 deliveries from August 2020 to date. He blamed ignorance for the increasing cases of fistula in the state.

He said, “We want philanthropists, individuals and non-governmental organisations to join the federal government in funding and supporting the centre.”

He thanked the first lady of Ebonyi State, Mrs Rachael Umahi, for her assistance to the centre through her Family Succour and Upliftment Foundation.

The chairman of the chapel, Comrade Sampson Nwafor, commended the management of the centre for proving quality health care services for the well-being of the people.
