President Muhammadu Buhari alongside four other ECOWAS leaders are set to meet today (Monday) in Abuja to decide the next line of action on the lingering political impasse in The Gambia.

According to the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the meeting is part of earlier efforts made by the African leaders to ensure a smooth transition of power between incumbent President, Yahya Jammeh and the newly elected President, Adama Barrow.

“The Presidents of Liberia and Senegal, the Vice President of Sierra-Leone and ex-President Mahama are expected at the meeting,’’ said Shehu.

THE WHISTLER earlier reported that President Jammeh, who has refused to accept defeat in The Gambia’s last election, restated that only Allah can make him handover to President-elect Barrow.

Jammeh was quoted as saying: “I am not a coward. My right cannot be intimidated and violated. This is my position. Nobody can deprive me of that victory except the Almighty Allah.

“Already the ECOWAS [Economic Community of West African States] meeting was a formality. Before they came, they had already said Jammeh must step down. I will not step down,” he said.
