EFCC Detains Ex-SGF Babachir Lawal Overnight
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.
The EFCC Acting Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Samin Amaddin, confirmed this on Wednesday.
It was learnt that Lawal arrived at the Abuja office of the EFCC around 11am on Wednesday after which he was detained.
This comes a day after President Muhammadu Buhari was accused of shielding the ex-SGF, who was fingered in a corruption scandal.
It will be recalled that former President Olusegun Obasanjo in a letter on President Buhari on Tuesday cited Babachir’s matter as one which the President glaringly ignored.
Babachir was indicted by the Senate’s ad-hoc committee on mounting humanitarian crisis in north-east in expending funds meant for alleviating sufferings of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.
But Mr Buhari wrote a letter to the Senate, asking the lawmakers to set aside their call for the resignation of the then SGF.
Obasanjo said: “There are three other areas where President Buhari has come out more glaringly than most of us thought we knew about him. One is nepotic deployment bordering on clannishness and inability to bring discipline to bear on errant members of his nepotic court.
“This has grave consequences on performance of his government to the detriment of the nation. It would appear that national interest was being sacrificed on the altar of nepotic interest.
“What does one make of a case like that of Maina: collusion, condonation, ineptitude, incompetence, dereliction of responsibility or kinship and friendship on the part of those who should have taken visible and deterrent disciplinary action? How many similar cases are buried, ignored or covered up.”
