EFCC Disowns Audio on Fayose’s Interrogation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has described as “fake,” voice recording circulating the social media in which the Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, purportedly made comments to the effect that nothing will happen if immediate past governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose dies in custody.

EFCC in a series of statements via its official Twitter on Thursday called on the general public to disregard the audio tape.

Recall that Fayose who has now spent 2 days in EFCC custody, is under probe for allegedly receiving N1.3bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) through a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, during the build-up to the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State.

The anti-graft agency said the purported audio recording was the “creation and handiwork of mischief makers’ intent on distracting the EFCC from the serious work of wrapping up the investigation into the corruption allegations against Fayose.”

The statement reads: “The EFCC alerts the public of an audio recording currently circulating in the social media in which Acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, purportedly made comments to effect that nothing will happen peradventure Ayo Fayose, ex-Ekiti governor dies in custody.

“Interestingly, the audio tape did not disclose the place where the conversation occurred and the person that Magu was supposedly talking to members of the public are advised to disregard this disingenuous creation and handiwork of mischief makers’ intent on distracting the EFCC from the serious work of wrapping up the investigation into the corruption allegations against Fayose.

“The audio recording is fake as the comments did not emanate from the Chairman of the EFCC.

“Purveyors of this fake news especially a former spokesperson of a leading political party are warned to desist.”
