EFCC: Magu Prepares Defense Against Presidential Panel’s Allegations

The suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is preparing his defense against the allegations of corruption and abuse of office levelled against him in the report submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari by a presidential panel.

A source close to Magu revealed this to THE WHISTLER on Thursday in Abuja.

The suspended EFCC chairman was arrested last week Monday and had been appearing before the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel investigating initial allegations of corruption levelled against him by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

Magu was released on Wednesday, after spending about nine nights in police detention.

The source, who pleaded anonymity, also revealed to this website that Magu was still occupying his official residence in the Maitama area of Abuja, contrary to media reports that he had been evicted.

“Mr Magu is preparing his defence. He is still at his official residence at about 3 p.m.,” the source said, adding that, “He did not appear before the panel (today, Thursday). He is fine tuning his defence for presentation to the panel.”

Prior to Magu’s release, a report credited to the presidential panel had accused him of failing to declare 322 properties recovered by the EFCC to the federal government.

The embattled EFCC chairman was also accused of purchasing a Dubia property worth N573 million using funds he allegedly laundered through a pastor.

But in a letter he wrote to the Salami panel through his lawyer, Wahab Shittu, Magu denied what he described as, “serial falsehood publications in the media in respect of matters which never featured in the proceedings of this Honourable Panel.”
