Electricity, Fuel Price Hike: SAN To Lead Protest In Lagos

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN has urged Nigerians to join his group in protest on Monday, over the recent electricity and fuel pump price hike.

Adegboruwa, however kicked against the planned nationwide strike action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.

“THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES.
“I support the planned PROTEST (not STRIKE) by NLC, TUC and Civil Society Organisations.

“Please join us at Tejuosho tomorrow
morning or any other location where you are domiciled,” he stated in a Facebook post.

Adegboruwa stressed that it was lawful for Nigerians to protest what they feel was unsavory towards them.

However, he distanced himself from any strike action, but stressed Nigerians had the constitutional right to protest.

“Section 39(1) of 1999 Constitution:
Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference,” he stated.

Recall that the NLC and the TUC had proposed a strike action in a bid to compel the federal government to reverse the hike.

But the National Industrial Court, in two separate rulings, have restrained workers from going on strike.

Consequently, the federal government directed its workers to shun the planned strike action by labour unions and report to work on Monday.

“Accordingly, all officers on Grade Level 12 and above and those on essential services are hereby strongly advised to be at work to perform their official duties.

“Furthermore, it is important to note that there is a court injunction granted by the National Industrial Court (Suit No. NICN/ABJ/253/2020) on 24 September, 2020 restraining the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria from embarking on any form of industrial action pending the hearing and determination of a Motion on Notice,” the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation,Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, stated.
