#EndPoliceBrutality: SERAP Urges ICC To Monitor Alleged Sponsorship Of Hoodlums Amid Protests

The Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to closely follow up on thuggery amid the widespread protests calling for the end to brutality by some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

SERAP maintained that thuggery was unconstitutional and a violation of human right.

“Using thugs to attack peaceful protesters is a crime against humanity.

“We’re calling on @IntlCrimCourt to closely monitor the events around #EndSWAT #EndPoliceBrutality protests across Nigeria, identify individuals responsible for attacks on protesters and hold them to account,” it tweeted on Thursday.

Despite the call by Nigerians for police reforms, video footages had shown certain persons vandalising cars in parts of the country in broad daylight.

On its part, the Force, in response to the protests, had pledged that it was committed to reforming its operations.

But, it urged citizens to remain law abiding and not to take laws into their hands.

“While re-affirming his irrevocable commitment towards the successful and holistic implementation of the Police reforms, the IGP enjoins members of the public, particularly protesting citizens to exercise restraint and allow measures being put in place to come to fruition and engender a Police Force that would meet the yearnings and aspirations of the citizenry,” it stated.

Among other things, the principle of the ICC proceedings is weaved around independent prosecution, fair trials and fighting aggression.
