The Federal Government, on Tuesday, ordered the newly decorated Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Martins Kure Abeshi to deploy more personnel of the service to all air, water and land borders in the country in order to checkmate the influx of illegal immigrants.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Abubakar Magaji conveyed the directive while speaking at the decoration ceremony of the new NIS Comptroller General in Abuja.

He said, “Urgent attention should be paid to the management of Nigeria’s land, air and water borders. In particular, more personnel should be deployed to effectively man our land border”.

The Permanent Secretary, who pointed out that the responsibility of border control and prevention of illegal migrants from coming into Nigeria rest squarely on the NIS, warned that “any failure in that direction will not be tolerated by the government.”

He assured that more working tools be provided to the officers and men at the borders while their welfare should also be improved to encourage them work with diligence and without compromise.

He also charged the Comptroller General to redirect the affairs of the NIS on the path of honour where extant rules and regulations, due process and standard practice are followed, stressing that decisive measures must be taken to address corrupt practices, indiscipline and wrong-doings.

Magaji said, “Other issues that should also be addressed immediately include the alleged excess charges for Nigeria’s standard passport, indiscriminate issuance of official and diplomatic passports and sharp practices associated with numerous immigration services”.

Speaking after his decoration, the Comptroller General thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his appointment.

He vowed to reposition the NIS to be more effective in its statutory duties, especially in the area of hinterland and border security.

CG Abeshi said, “We intend to give Nigerians a Citizen Inclusive Immigration Service”,

He added that details of his mission and vision as the boss of NIS will be made public soon.

Mr. Abeshi was appointed Comptroller General of the NIS on Friday 28th August, 2015 after taking charge in an acting capacity for a week following the suspension of former Comptroller General, David Shikfu Parradang.
