Enugu Airport Reopens One Year After Closure

The Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, will reopen on Sunday, one year after operations were shut down.

This was disclosed by the Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, on Saturday after a final round of supervision ahead of reopening.

The rehabilitation of the airport has been mired in controversy with the effort suffering several stoppage due to lack of fund.

However, Igbo leaders led by the South-East governors and National Assembly members mounted pressure on the Federal Government to hasten its completion.

They consistently , lamented the negative impact of the continued closure of the airport on the people and economy of the Southeast.

The completion and reopening schedule had been made and cancelled many times for different reasons, with the last caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a tweet by the minister, the newly reconstructed runway of the airport is of excellent quality.
