Enugu Community Distances Self From Ofalla, Cites Marginalisation

The people of Edeaniagu Clan in Ishi-Ozalla Community, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Sunday, distanced themselves from the planned Ishi-Ozalla Ofalla celebration slated for Monday, 29th December 2025.

The President General of Edeanigu Clan, Chief Uchenna Nweke, told THE WHISTLER that his people were unaware of the planned Ofalla, hence “should not be dragged into it”.

According to him, Edeaniagu people got the hint of the planned Ofalla on the social media. “Those fronting our purported participation are unknown to us,” he said, adding that, “They claimed that Edeanigu Clan contributed N100, 000 in support of the Ofalla. It is laughable and a blatant lie from shadow chasers.”

Chief Nweke stated that Edeaniagu people were not part of the process that produced any traditional ruler in Ishi-Ozalla and challenged “the peddlers of the fake news to make public the identity of the individual or group that made the payment on behalf of Edeaniagu Clan”.

A member of Edeaniagu Royal Cabinet, Chief Peter Agu, explained that both the leadership of Edeaniagu women and youth groups “did not and will not contribute to the said Ofalla”, and warned that, “Every of our sons and daughters should distance themselves equally to avoid the wrath of the gods”.

Investigations by our correspondent showed that the disunity in Ishi-Ozalla emanated from an alleged refusal of some interests in the community to allow Chief Chinedu Nweke, a renowned actor, to assume the position of the traditional ruler of Ishi-Ozalla after he was elected. The larger Ishi-Ozalla claimed that Edeaniagu clan migrated to Ishi-Ozalla, hence not qualified to produce the traditional ruler of the community.

An independent researcher, BC Uroko, in a book entitled “Edeaniagu Royal Kingdom, Aborigines or Settlers?” established that Edeaniagu clan “are the aborigines of Ishi-Ozalla” while those categorisng them as settlers “actually migrated from Udi and were welcomed to the kingdom by the forefather of the Edeaniagu clan”.

Prof Muna Nweke Okoye, a human rights activist of Edeaniagu, urged the state government to approve the already “pre-qualified Edeanigu Autonomous Community to ensure lasting peace in Ishi-Ozalla”.

Muna told our correspondent that, “Our great grandfathe, Edeanigu, was a philanthropist and was known for accommodating people. He fed many families in this Ishi-Ozalla and gave them life. But we are being treated as second class citizens. History will vindicate the just. We want peace, but we would like the government to give us our approved autonomous community.”

HRM Don Sylvesyer Nweke, the Royal leader of Edeaniagu clan, urged the people to recommit themselves to the development of the community, and assured them of his commitment to making Edeaniagu clan a model of peace.
