Enugu: Parents, Students Cautious As Schools Resume In Enugu

Many schools across Enugu metropolis, Monday, experienced low turnout of pupils and students as schools resume in the state.

THE WHISTLER went round Enugu metropolis and noticed that many teachers were available at various schools, with no corresponding number of those to teach. They attribute it to the second wave of Covid-19.

A teacher at Primary School, Agu Abor, Mrs Nkechi Ugwu, said, “With time they will come. It is usual that parents don’t allow their children and wards to start school on resumption days. Some don’t want their wards to participate in cleaning the environment. Above all, the fear of Covid-19 is a major factor. On our part, we ensure the observance of the NCDC preventive protocols.”

A parent, Chekwube Eze, said, “I won’t allow my kids to resume until I observe the situation. It is all about life. They asked schools to provide preventive measures, such as running water. How many schools have water facilities? On my part, I have bought face masks for my children. The major headache will be the sitting arrangement as most schools are over-crowded. I call on the government to inaugurate an implementation committee to ensure compliance at schools. School owners want schools reopen because they need money. Private school teachers have also suffered a lot because most of them were not paid fully during the first wave of the pandemic.”

At Enugu State University of Science and Technology, lecturers and few students were seen strolling in. Some wore face masks. One of them said, “I want schools to resume in earnest. I am tired of staying at home. Again, I want to graduate as soon as possible. It lies on everybody to live responsibly because if there is escalation, the government will shut schools as being done in some foreign countries.”

Our correspondent reports that academic activities were seen going on in some of the schools visited, especially private schools.
