To avoid incurring the wrath of protesters, commercial drivers also force their passengers to carry tree branches as the condition to board their buses. They told our correspondent that it was to show solidarity to the protesters.

According to a driver going to Onitsha, “There are pockets of protesters here and there, and we must show solidarity, otherwise they can attack us. This protest is getting out of hand. Buhari should better resign to restore peace in the land.”

Meanwhile, the road leading to the premises of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Old Park, Enugu, has been blocked, while the armed squad of the service guard the premises to avoid invasion by protesters.

A trader opposite the NCS, who did not want his name mentioned, said, “We were the first to close businesses because we fear the custodian might be attacked. No vehicular movement along this road since noon.”

There was however pandemonium when members of the IPOB, loaded in a 1414 bus, arrived at the premises, and insisted that must pass through despite the blockage. An eyewitness said, “Nobody disturbed them as they removed the tyres and drove across. Not even the soldiers disturbed them.”

However, there was no presence of police operatives around the premises.
