Enugu: Woman Cries For Help As Cement Truck Falls, Kills Scores At 9th Mile

Mrs Anayo Odo, whose husband, Nnamdi Odo, 30, was seriously injured in Tuesday evening’s accident which involved a truck belonging to BUA Cement, and another truck used in carrying drinks, Thursday, sought assistance from the public to enable her husband get treatment at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane.

THE WHISTLER reports that the cement truck, around 6:27pm on the fateful day, lost control, and rammed into the drinks truck before falling around Ama Breweries junction, en route to 9th Mile in Enugu State.

An eyewitness, Chike Omeje, said, “The truck killed some okada riders before falling by the roadside. Many were also injured. I learnt also that some bags of cement falling off the truck landed on people who were scampering for safety, killing some instantly while injured ones were taken to hospital. The cement truck was on top speed.”

It was gathered that Mr Nnamdi Odo, from Ezimo in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, was among those hit by the falling bags of cement. A source said he was walking by the roadside, alongside three other persons when the accident occurred.

“They managed to run away from where the truck crashed, but the bags of cement falling off the truck hit them. Good-spirited individuals took some of them to hospital. Some actually died there. I learnt that two victims also died in the hospital where Nnamdi was admitted,” a fuel attendant told our correspondent.

According to Nnamdi’s friend, Jude, “He was referred to Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, because his case was complicated. He was bleeding through the ear, nostrils, mouth; with swollen cheeks and a bloodied eye. The doctor said it affected his chest, head, and had so far recommended far-reaching tests and x-rays.”

According to his wife, a mother of one, his husband was recently relieved of his job at Ama Breweries where he worked as a security, and currently had no job. He appealed to public-spirited individuals and groups to assist her in taking care of her husband’s medical bills. She gave the number of her brother as 08142562986.
