Ethical Lapses At Senior Level Undermine Public Trust, IGP Tells Officers

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday highlighted the evolving security challenges facing Nigeria, stressing that contemporary threats require strategic thinking, adaptability, intelligence-led operations, and effective use of available resources.

He noted that addressing these challenges “demands proactive, analytical, and solution-focused approaches from senior officers”.

Egbetokun made these remarks during a decoration ceremony in Abuja, where officers were elevated to senior ranks within the Nigeria Police Force.

He described promotion within the force as a structured institutional process grounded in service record, leadership capacity, and demonstrated readiness for higher responsibility.

Elevation to a senior rank, he explained, represents organisational confidence in an officer’s judgement, discipline, and ability to function effectively under pressure.

Speaking at the ceremony, Egbetokun said officers promoted to senior positions had progressed through multiple commands and operational environments that tested their resilience, professional maturity, and decision-making.

These experiences, he noted, shaped their leadership outlook and prepared them for the responsibilities of higher command.

He emphasised that advancement carries the expectation that rank will translate into leadership effectiveness and improved organisational performance.

Senior command, he explained, requires clarity of thought, decisiveness, emotional control, and an understanding of the broader implications of operational decisions.

“At this level, officers are required to manage systems, coordinate resources, and deliver outcomes that reinforce public safety and institutional credibility. Promotion must also be understood as a renewed call to service.

The authority you carry today comes with heightened administrative, operational, and ethical accountability. The conduct of officers under your command will increasingly reflect your leadership choices and standards.

“Ethical leadership remains non-negotiable. Integrity, accountability, and respect for human dignity must guide your actions at all times.

“Misconduct tolerated at the senior level weakens discipline and erodes public trust. You must therefore be firm, fair, and consistent in enforcing professional standards within your commands,” he said.

Egbetokun noted that senior rank brings increased visibility and oversight, requiring officers to demonstrate competence not only in operations but also in engagement with stakeholders, inter-agency coordination, and community relations.

He added that contemporary policing places growing emphasis on professionalism, collaboration, and responsiveness to public expectations.

He acknowledged the role of the Police Service Commission in overseeing promotions, describing its diligence and transparency as essential to accountability and personnel development.

As the officers assume expanded responsibilities, Egbetokun stated that leadership at this level must remain “lawful, disciplined, measured, and outcome-oriented.”

He stressed the importance of balancing authority with restraint, enforcement with justice, and immediate operational demands with long-term strategic considerations.

“You are therefore charged to justify this elevation through disciplined leadership, sound professional judgement, and demonstrable results.

“At this level of command, experience must translate into clarity of decision-making, consistency in standards, and measurable improvement in operational outcomes.

“The confidence reposed in you is institutional, and it must be repaid through leadership that strengthens public trust, reinforces internal discipline, and advances the effectiveness and credibility of the NPF,” he concluded.
