Ethiopian Athlete Dies Four Months After Winning Stockholm Marathon

Ethiopian Athlete Shewarge Amare Alene has died four months after winning the Stockholm Marathon in Sweden.

The 30-year-old fell sick during a training run in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead.

She won the Stockholm Marathon race with an impressive time of 2:30:38.

The organisers of the Marathon confirmed her death in a statement on Thursday.

The statement read: “It is with deep sadness that we received the news of the passing of Shewarge Alene, winner of the adidas Stockholm Marathon 2025.

“Shewarge Alene felt unwell during a training session and was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, her life could not be saved. She was 30 years old. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.”

Alene ran 27 marathons in her career. She won 12 of them. She also finished on the podium many more times. Her biggest international victories came in Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, Bangkok, and Mérida.

Her personal best times were 1:07:43 hours in the half marathon, achieved in May 2022 in Konya; and 2:27:26 hours in the marathon, achieved in October 2023 in the Cape Town Marathon.
