EU Donated N145b Humanitarian Assistance To Nigeria In 6 Years – Report

The European Union (EU) has disclosed that from 2014 to 2020, it donated about €297.9 million (145,338,753,532.50) to help Nigerian government address the humanitarian crisis across the country.

EU made this known in a report on Tuesday tagged “Nigeria: EU Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy in the World 2020 Country Updates.”

It noted that the donations targeted the crises in North-East, in the Niger Delta and the Middle Belt.

Among other things, the EU said the funds were weaved around dialogue and mediation efforts.

“Since 2014, almost EUR 245 million in humanitarian assistance has been allocated to Nigeria. In 2020, the EU provided an additional EUR 26.5 million, predominantly allocated to respond to the humanitarian situation in the North East.

“Member States have also contributed substantial amounts. Since 2014, the Instrument contributing to Stability and Peace has supported Nigeria with EUR 26.4 million in response to the different crises in the North East, in the Niger Delta and the Middle Belt.

“This engagement has supported dialogue and mediation initiatives in the Niger Delta, in the North East and the Middle Belt as well as capacity building of security and justice actors to implement de-radicalisation programmes in prisons, and enhance their civilian protection policies and practices,” it stated.

The report further claimed that insurgency and allegations of security forces abuses have made the North-East one of the worst humanitarian and protracted crises in the world.

It also noted that Nigeria’s “declining security and a shrinking economy” has led to civil unrest and crime across the country.
