Evans’ Kidnapping Case: Court Awards N2m Fine Against Police

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has awarded N2million to Mr Okwuchukwu Obiechina, the brother-in-law of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans.

The court awarded the fine against the police over the “unlawful and unconstitutional” arrest and detention of Obiechina.

Obiechina was held in police detention for his alleged involvement with Evans’ kidnapping case.

His lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, said he has been detained by the police since June 2 and prayed the court to order his release from police detention.

Giving his ruling on Monday, Justice Mohammed Idris ordered the police to immediately release Obiechina.

He held that the remand order which the police claimed to have obtained from a magistrates’ court was invalid.

Justice Idris further ordered the force to tender a public apology to Obiechina to be published in two national dailies.
