Ex-Super Eagles Midfielder Handed 5-Year Ban From Football In Sweden

Former Super Eagles of Nigeria midfielder, Dickson Etuhu has been banned for 5 years from all footballing activities in Sweden for his involvement in a match fixing scandal.

The 37 year old was alleged to have offered bribe to former AIK Stockholm team mate and reserve goalkeeper, Kenny Stamatopoulos, to fix a match against Gothenburg in May 2017.

Stamatopoulos was offered around 180,000 pounds to influence his performance after an injury to the club first choice goal keeper.But Stamatopoulos reported the issue which lead to the match being postponed.

The second accomplice to the bribery, Alban Jusufi, an ex striker of the team, was also punished.

Completesports.com reports that Etuhu denied the allegation but after a thorough and lengthy investigation,he was found guilty in November 2019.

The Swedish FA gave him a five year ban from any football related event in Sweden till April 13, 2025. He also avoided a prison sentence.

In a statement, the Swedish FA said: “The Disciplinary Board has decided to suspend two people because they have deliberately tried to persuade a football player to underperform in one of the team’s matches.

“Through their actions, these people have violated the anti-match fixing regulations, and they are therefore suspended for five years.

“The ban includes training, competing or performing any assignments in any sports.”

Etuhu made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2007 and has 33 caps for the national side before quitting in 2011.
