EXCLUSIVE: Kano Police Put Politicians Who ‘Bail’ Criminal Suspects On Surveillance

The Kano State Police Command has revealed that politicians in the state found of getting suspected criminals released from police detention have been placed on the watch list of the Command.

Spokesman of the Command, Magaji Musa Majia, a Superintendent of Police, made the revelation during an exclusive chat with THE WHISTLER at the Command headquarters in Bompai, Kano.

Majia, who also disclosed that the Command arrested not less than 3,400 suspected armed robbers and violent political thugs in 2018, stated that the move to put some politicians on watch list became necessary because of the negative role they play in the promotion of violence and crimes.

“When some of these suspected criminals are arrested, some politicians would come and bail them because they work for them. This is why we decided to watch some of these politicians and their activities,” he told the reporter, without disclosing the names of such politicians.

Majia said out of the 3.400 suspected criminals arrested last year, the Command successfully prosecuted about 3,350, adding that the others were still being arraigned.

The Kano police PRO also revealed that drug and substance abuse were responsible for over 90 percent of the crimes committed in the state, stressing that the situation spurred the Command to tackle the menace headlong.

He said: “We have been raiding all notorious spots and identified drug dealers in the state. Over 200 drug dealers were arrested in 2018 and all were convicted by the last quarter of 2018. We have cleared several notorious drug spots in the metropolis and the communities converted them to places of worship of schools,

“We were able to achieve these through community policing strategies; we’re working with the communities-traditional rulers, religious leaders, youths and elders in the affected communities.”

He also disclosed that over N50 million worth of drugs were destroyed by the police in 2018 alone, adding that the steps taken by the police have drastically reduced crimes in the state.

According to NDLEA statistics, Kano State has the highest prevalence of drug abuse in the North West, with marijuana, tramadol and diazepam as the most common drugs of abuse.
