FA Cup: Lucas Saves Liverpool, Southampton, Newcastle Also Advance

Lucas Leiva’s first half strike gave Liverpool a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle in the Emirates FA Cup third-round replay at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Brazilian headed in Philippe Coutinho’s corner in the 18th-minute to give Jurgen Klopp’s side a place in the fourth round, after playing out a 0-0 draw against Plymouth 10 days ago.

It was his first goal since a Europa League tie against Steaua Bucharest in September 2010.

Divock Origi nearly doubled their advantage but the Belgian squandered a late penalty as his effort was well saved by Luke McCormick.

“Every week in training we play old versus young and he is a top scorer for old, which is unbelievable,” Liverpool manager Klopp said of Lucas’s goal.

“Maybe it wasn’t the most exciting game, but for us it’s very important as it’s another game for a few of the young boys, so that’s all good,” the German added.

Liverpool will host second-division side Wolverhampton Wanderers in round four on January 28.

Southampton will host 12-time winners, Arsenal in the fourth- round while The Magpies travel to Oxford United.
