Family Of Kaduna Teenager ‘Killed’ By Abductor Still Wait For Corpse 6 Years After

For the family of 15-year-old Hajara Ahmadu, her “death” since 2014 has remained in the realm of fiction up till today.

According to the family, Hajara was 15 and a junior secondary school (JSS3) student of Government Secondary School, Kurumi Dangara in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State when she was reported missing in April 2013.

Her family did not see her until news of her alleged death came in 2014. They never believed the story that she died, having not seen her corpse.

After a family member of the alleged abductor broke the news to them, the bereaved family reported the case to the Kagarko Police Division in Kaduna, where the mother of the suspect— Barmeni Nuhu was reportedly arrested afterwards.

Following her arrest, the suspect, Kinsley Esuwa, based in Lagos as of the time of the incident, was apprehended on charges of abduction, kidnap and murder.

In a case file number DCF/105/IGB/ADMIN/NET VOL II, Esuwa allegedly abducted, kidnapped and took Hajara to Ibejo Lekki in Lagos State (no specific address) from her hometown in Kaduna in 2013.

He reportedly forced her into marriage, changed her religion to Islam, whereas retained his faith as a Christian. He also changed her name Hajara Ahmadu to Kinsley Mariam. But it remained unclear why she would be converted to Islam by an abductor who remained a Christian.

Bereaved Family Rejects ‘Fictitious’ Medical Report

Investigations by the police revealed that Hajara had died over alleged complications while she was in labour during a pregnancy. But there is no evidence she left a child after her death, and there’s no picture of her during pregnancy..

Also, medical documentations made available to THE WHISTLER showed that Hajara tested positive for Hepatitis B and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) which reportedly led to her death.

Her families, however, rejected the report.

In a phone conversation with THE WHISTLER, Sergeant Stephen Ahmadu, elder brother of Hajara noted that the medical results presented to the police were contradictory and fictitious.

“How can they say my sister has died, and there was no autopsy or death certificate showing the date and time when she died? Even the medical reports from the different hospitals they presented do not have the same information.

“Okay, I told them that I will follow them to Lagos to see the corpse so that my family can be at rest and accept their fate but no, everyone including the Police is just playing us,” he lamented.

Medical reports made available to THE WHISTLER showed also that there are contradictions to Hajara’s age, name and there is doubts over the authenticity of several reports made available to the police.

THE WHISTLER observed that one of the reports from a private hospital, “Heart to Heart Clinic” had no specific address, name of the resident doctor, signature, stamp and official letter headed paper.

Other reports showing Hajara’s PVC/RVC was also rejected stating that the name Kinsley Mariam contradicted her actual name – Hajara Ahmadu.

According to the family, there was no official document proving a change of name neither was the family contacted on any marital rites nor consented to any marriage proposal.

The family also noted that the change of name from Kingsley Nuhu (since name of the suspect’s mother is  Barmeni Nuhu) to Kinsley Esuwa was a clear indication of ulterior motives.

Family Demands Hajara’s Corpse As Suspect At Large

It has been 7 years since Hajara was reportedly missing, and 6 years gone since the news of her alleged death, yet her bereaved family are yet to see her corpse.

Speaking to THE WHISTLER, the prosecuting counsel, Johnson Oyewole noted that regardless of the evidence presented to the police since the inception of the case, the suspect (the man who abducted her) is yet to face justice.

According to him, following his first arrest in 2013, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Kaduna State Ministry of Justice had dismissed and discharged the case stating that the complainants had no clear evidence against the defendant, insisting the deceased had died as a result of AIDS and Hepatitis B.

The family alleged that the Police had collected over N150, 000 from them to allegedly carry out investigation in Lagos. But they later discovered the police did not travel to Lagos or conduct any investigation on the matter.

The police said they travel to Lagos to verify the medical document which claimed Hajara died of AIDS and that she died while giving birth. But the police eventually wrote a report which exonerated and the suspect and his mother..

Speaking to THE WHISTLER, the elder brother of the deceased decried the manner the Kaduna Police Command handled the case, alleging conspiracy between the police and families of the suspect.

He said the father of the suspect is a dismissed  Air Force personnel, suggesting he could have used his influence to kill the case..

When THE WHISTLER contacted the  Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Monday Omo-Osagie) handling the case (as indicated by the family), he declined to comment on the matter, saying his legal profession forbids him from speaking on matters before the court..

He asked the reporter to direct all enquiries to the command’s Public Relation Officer.

Consequently, the newspaper reached out to the Kaduna PPRO, Muhammed Jalinge, on the issue but got no response, as he failed to fulfill his promise to speak on the matter.

Jalinge had promised to speak to the newspaper at a given time after several calls and text to his phone. However, when he was contacted, at the agreed time, he refused to pick his calls.
