Federal High Court Reopens With ‘New Judges’

Following the suspension of the two months strike action by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), the gate of the Federal High Court Headquarters, Maitama Abuja was opened for visitors and lawyers with members of staff on duty.

Our correspondent observed that lawyers were at some of the court rooms to take new dates.

Our correspondent learnt that cases that fell within the JUSUN strike were also expected to be rescheduled for another date.

An official at Justice Inyang Ekwo’s court told our correspondent that “today is for fixing of dates, when matters are coming up, I will let you know.”

Furthermore, three new judges have already taken charge of three court rooms following the transfer of Justices Ijeoma Ojukwu, Okong Abang and Folashade Giwa.

Recall that FHC Chief Judge , John Tsoho had approved the transfer of affected judges on March 17.

Justice Bolaji Olajuwon from Makurdi, took over from Justice Ojukwu who is now in Calabar.

Justice Zainab Abubakar replaced Giwa upon her transfer to Enugu.

Justice Okong Abang (transferred to Warri) is replaced by Justice D.U. Okorowo from Lokoja.

Our correspondent learnt that Justice Okorowo came to court but the court was not sitting.

Meanwhile, Olajuwon presided over an arraignment matter involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and nine defendants.

But the EFCC Counsel, represented by Ifeanyi Iheanacho, prayed the court for an adjournment since she was just resuming.

On her part, the judge adjourned to 23rd of June for fresh arraignment.
