FG Begins Payment Of ASUU’s Withheld Salaries

The Federal Government has commenced the payment of the withheld salaries of academic staff under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU).

Recall that the Buhari-led government withheld the seven months’ salaries of academic staff in public universities following the eight-month industrial action by university academic staff in 2022.

But the Tinubu-led administration approved a partial waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” and ordered the release of four months of the withheld salary.

Multiple sources in the academic sector confirmed that some lecturers have started receiving their salaries.

The National President of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) Dr Niyi Sunmonu who confirmed the report said some of their members have so far been paid.

“Yes, I can say that our members started getting alerts two months early today, Sunday, but only few have so far got that. As I speak with you, I have not gotten any alerts. We may not be able to confirm the number of people that have been paid until during the week when we hope to assess the situation.

” The number of months being withheld is seven. We got information that the President approved the payment for four months but as of today, those who have got anything only got two months. That is what the situation is as of now,” he said.
